Navigating the stigma of being Kapu in a work environment and finding acceptance

Navigating the work environment as someone who identifies as Kapu can feel like walking a tightrope, can’t it? Many of us know the weight of stigma that comes from being different in a space that often values conformity. It can be exhausting, and the fear of judgment or misunderstanding can make us hesitant to fully show up as ourselves.
One thing that helped me was finding a small group of colleagues who share similar experiences. We started meeting up during lunch breaks, where we could talk openly about our challenges and the microaggressions we face. Just having those conversations made a world of difference — it reminded me that I’m not alone in this. Many of us are so afraid of being judged that we keep our identities hidden, but sharing even just a little with someone who gets it can lighten that burden.
Another approach some of us have tried is being open about our identity when it feels safe. This isn’t easy, and it’s definitely a personal choice, but I’ve found that when I share my Kapu background, it often sparks curiosity and leads to deeper conversations. It can be scary to take that leap, especially in a professional setting, but sometimes it opens the door to understanding and acceptance.
We also need to remember the importance of self-care in these spaces. It’s okay to step back when you’re feeling overwhelmed by the stigma or negativity. Taking time for ourselves, whether it’s through journaling, meditation, or connecting with friends who understand, can help us recharge.
Sometimes, the isolation can feel so heavy, but connecting with even one person who knows what it’s like can truly change everything. Anyone else navigating the complexities of being Kapu at work? I’d love to hear what’s helped you find acceptance and connection in your own journey.
