The pressure to conform: Do you feel like you have to hide parts of yourself in certain social settings?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us know that feeling all too well—the pressure to conform in social settings, especially when it comes to embracing our Kamma identity. Whether it’s during family gatherings or casual hangouts with friends, there can often be an unspoken expectation to dial down certain aspects of ourselves. It can feel exhausting, and sometimes lonely, to navigate this balancing act. One thing that has helped me is finding spaces where I can be my true self. For example, I started attending local Kamma events, and connecting with others who share similar experiences has been a game changer. Just being in a room where everyone understands the nuances of our culture and the challenges we face makes it so much easier to drop the façade. It’s like a weight lifts off our shoulders. Another approach is to practice small acts of authenticity in everyday situations. Maybe it’s sharing a piece of our culture—be it food, music, or stories—when we’re with friends who might not really get it. This not only opens up conversations but can also help those around us appreciate our unique background. We might even find that some of our friends are more open-minded than we think! It’s also important to remember that it’s okay to set boundaries. If you’re in a situation where you feel pressured to conform, it’s perfectly fine to excuse yourself or steer the conversation away from topics that make you uncomfortable. This can be tough, but prioritizing our mental well-being is crucial. Sometimes, just having one person in your life who truly understands the complexities of being Kamma can change everything. I found someone going through the same struggles, and our regular chats about our experiences have made this journey feel less isolating. Anyone else feeling this pressure to hide parts of yourself? How do you navigate those tricky social situations? I’d love to hear what’s worked for you.
