How do you navigate cultural expectations while staying true to your identity as a Kallar?

Many of us know the feeling of being caught between two worlds—cultural expectations from our families and communities on one side, and our own identities as Kallar on the other. It can be tough to navigate expectations, especially when they seem to clash with who we truly are.
One thing that really helped me was finding a small group of people who understand this struggle. We started meeting once a month, just to hang out and talk about our experiences. Having even just one person in your life who truly gets the weight of cultural expectations can be a game changer. It’s comforting to share our stories—like the pressure to conform in social situations or the guilt that arises when we choose to live our truth.
Another approach some of us try is setting personal boundaries when it comes to cultural obligations. It’s not always easy, but knowing what we can manage helps us stay true to ourselves while still respecting our roots. For instance, I’ve learned to say no to certain events that feel overwhelming. It’s okay to prioritize our mental well-being while still honoring our culture in our own way.
We also find strength in celebrating our identity as Kallar. Whether it’s through art, music, or even cooking traditional dishes with a twist that reflects who we are today, these small acts of embracing our heritage can be empowering. Sharing these moments with others who appreciate the blend of our past and present can help alleviate feelings of isolation.
Navigating these expectations isn’t always straightforward, and many of us still grapple with it daily. Sometimes just talking to one person who gets it makes all the difference—what’s your experience? How do you balance cultural expectations and your identity?
