Navigating family expectations during traditional celebrations as an Iyer

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us in the Iyer community know that navigating family expectations during traditional celebrations can feel like walking a tightrope. Whether it's a festival, a wedding, or a family gathering, there’s often this unspoken pressure to uphold traditions while also staying true to our own identities and experiences. One thing that I’ve found helpful is setting boundaries around my participation. For instance, during celebrations like Pongal or Navaratri, I’ve started to express what parts of the rituals I feel connected to and which ones I might need to modify or skip. This has been a game-changer for me. I remember feeling overwhelmed by the need to be “perfect” in my role, but once I communicated my feelings, I noticed my family was more understanding than I expected. Another approach that some of us try is creating our own traditions within the family framework. Maybe that means introducing a modern twist to a traditional dish or suggesting a new way to celebrate that resonates with our personal experiences. For instance, last Diwali, we decided to have a potluck where everyone brought a dish that represented their own story or journey. It was beautiful to see how our diverse experiences blended together, and it reminded us that our identities can coexist with our traditions. Connecting with others who share our experiences can also make a huge difference. I found a few fellow Iyers in my area who also struggle with these expectations. We started meeting up before major celebrations to share our thoughts and strategies. Just having that support made me feel less isolated and more empowered to navigate these family gatherings. Ultimately, the mix of pride in our heritage and the desire to express our individuality can create tension, but it can also lead to beautiful moments of understanding. Anyone else dealing with this during family celebrations? It would be great to hear what has worked for you!
