How do you navigate family expectations around education and career choices as an Iyer?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Navigating family expectations around education and career choices can feel like a tightrope walk for many of us in the Iyer community. There’s often a rich tapestry of tradition woven into our lives, and while it can be beautiful, it can also feel heavy when we’re trying to carve our own paths. Many of us have felt that pressure to pursue certain fields — engineering, medicine, or law — because it’s what’s expected or deemed successful by our families. One thing that helped me was having honest conversations with my family about my passions. I remember sitting down with my parents and sharing my love for creative writing, something I was really nervous to bring up. Their initial reaction was a mix of concern and surprise, but it opened the door for deeper discussions. It’s not always easy, and sometimes it feels like we’re speaking different languages, but even just sharing our thoughts can help bridge that gap. Another approach some of us try is finding common ground. For example, if you’re drawn to a field that isn't traditionally valued by our families, you might highlight how it can still lead to financial stability or personal happiness. I found someone nearby who also faced similar expectations, and we started meeting weekly to brainstorm ways to explain our choices to our families. Knowing we weren’t alone in this struggle made it all feel a bit lighter. Navigating these expectations is definitely a journey filled with ups and downs. There might be moments of frustration and misunderstanding, but there are also those small victories where we feel heard. Sometimes just connecting with one person who understands this experience can shift our perspective. Anyone else dealing with this? I’d love to hear how you’re managing family expectations around education and career choices. Sharing our stories can really make a difference!
