Navigating medical appointments — how do you advocate for yourself?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Navigating medical appointments can feel daunting, especially for those of us in the intersex community. Many of us have experienced the frustration of feeling misunderstood or dismissed by healthcare providers who may not be familiar with our bodies or identities. It’s essential to advocate for ourselves, but that can be easier said than done. One thing that has helped many of us is preparing detailed notes before our appointments. Writing down our medical history, any symptoms, and specific questions we have can make a huge difference. It might feel awkward at first, but having that information on hand helps us stay focused and ensures we don’t forget anything important in the moment. Plus, it shows the provider that we are informed and serious about our health. Another approach some of us find helpful is bringing a friend or supportive person along. Having someone there who understands our journey can provide emotional support and help us articulate our needs. We’re often navigating complex feelings about our bodies and identities, and having someone to validate our experiences in the room can make a big difference. If you don’t have a friend who can join you, connecting with another intersex person in our community might be a great way to find that support. It’s also crucial to remember that we have the right to ask questions and seek clarity. If something doesn’t feel right or if we’re uncomfortable with a proposed treatment plan, it’s okay to voice those concerns. Many of us have found that saying something like, “I’d like to understand more about this approach and how it affects my identity” can open up a more constructive dialogue with our providers. The reality is that the medical field can sometimes feel like a maze, especially when our identities and needs are often overlooked. But by advocating for ourselves and seeking out connections, we can begin to carve out a path that respects our unique experiences. Anyone else navigating the challenges of medical appointments? What strategies have you found helpful in advocating for yourself? Sharing our experiences can really help us all feel a bit more empowered.
