Navigating medical appointments and feeling misunderstood as intersex

Navigating medical appointments can be a daunting experience for many of us in the intersex community. Whether it's the awkward questions, the misconceptions, or just the feeling of being misunderstood, it can feel isolating and frustrating. We deserve to be treated with respect and understanding, but that’s not always the reality in a clinical setting.
One thing that has helped me during appointments is to prepare a list of key points I want to discuss beforehand. This makes it easier to communicate my specific needs and concerns without getting sidetracked by irrelevant questions. It’s also a good idea to bring along any medical history or documentation that clarifies your intersex identity. This can help your healthcare provider understand your unique situation better and reduce the chance of misunderstandings.
Another approach that many of us find useful is to bring a supportive friend or advocate to appointments. Having someone there who understands our experiences can provide comfort and help articulate our needs. I found someone in my life who is also intersex, and we started going to appointments together — it’s made those hard conversations feel a little less burdensome.
And let's not forget about the power of connecting with others in our community. Sharing our experiences can be incredibly validating. Whether it’s chatting with someone about a recent appointment or exchanging tips on how to handle specific questions, it can be a relief to know we’re not alone in this. I’ve found that just having one person who gets it makes navigating these situations a bit easier.
Anyone else feeling the weight of medical appointments? What strategies have you found helpful in expressing your needs? Let’s support each other in this journey.
