Navigating relationships when you’re experiencing homelessness — who do you trust?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Navigating relationships when you’re experiencing homelessness can feel like walking a tightrope. Many of us know that sense of uncertainty and vulnerability, especially when it comes to trust. It’s tough to figure out who you can rely on, particularly when you’re facing so many challenges. One thing that has helped me is being open about my situation with a few people I felt might understand. It can be scary to let someone in, but sharing a little about your journey can lead to unexpected support. I found that even just one person who got it—someone who’s been through similar struggles—made a huge difference. We started meeting regularly, and having that connection helped ease the loneliness that often comes with this experience. Another approach some of us might try is to lean on local resources, like shelters or community centers. Many of these places have staff who are trained to help and can provide a safe space to talk about your feelings. Building relationships with people who are also navigating the system can foster a sense of community. You might be surprised at how sharing our stories with others can create bonds of trust. Trust doesn’t come easily when we’ve faced betrayal or misunderstanding, especially from people who don’t see beyond our situation. It’s crucial to take our time and choose wisely. Some of us find it helpful to observe how people treat others before opening up to them. If someone is compassionate towards those in need, they might be worth letting into our circle. If you’re feeling isolated, reaching out to local support groups can be a lifeline. Sometimes, just one conversation with someone who truly understands what you're going through can change everything. Anyone else navigating these tricky waters? I’d love to hear how you’ve built trust in your relationships while managing the challenges of homelessness.
