How do you cope with the judgment from strangers while navigating public spaces?

Navigating public spaces can feel like walking through a minefield sometimes, especially when we know the judgment that often comes our way. Many of us have faced those sideways glances, whispers, or outright comments that can sting and make us feel even more isolated. It's tough to carry the weight of our circumstances while also dealing with the perceptions of others.
One thing that has helped me is finding little ways to reclaim my space. For instance, wearing comfortable clothing that makes me feel good can help shift my focus from the judgment I might encounter to how I feel in my own skin. When we feel confident in ourselves, it can be a little easier to face the world, despite what others might think.
Another approach some of us try is to find supportive communities, whether online or in person. I remember meeting a few people at a local outreach program who really understood the challenges of being in public spaces. We started sharing our experiences — everything from how we handle judgment to the small victories we celebrate. Just having those conversations with people who get it made a world of difference for me. It can help to know that you’re not alone in facing those tough moments.
Sometimes, it might help to prepare for certain situations before heading out. If you know you'll be in a crowded place, maybe plan some quick coping strategies, like taking deep breaths or having a mantra to remind yourself of your worth. If it feels safe, you might even consider reaching out to someone nearby for support if you sense judgment. Just a friendly face can make navigating those spaces a bit easier.
Anyone else dealing with this? It can be so validating to share our stories and see how others cope. What strategies have you found helpful in handling judgment while out and about?
