What strategies do you use to stay safe while navigating public spaces?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Navigating public spaces can feel overwhelming for many of us who have experienced homelessness. It’s like walking through a minefield of uncertainty, where every corner holds a potential challenge. We might feel invisible, judged, or even unsafe, and it’s tough to shake that feeling off. One strategy I’ve found helpful is to stay aware of my surroundings, especially in unfamiliar areas. This means scanning the space for exits, knowing where the nearest shelters or resource centers are, and being mindful of who’s around. It’s not always easy, and sometimes it feels like we’re on high alert constantly, but it can really help in feeling a bit more in control. Another thing that’s made a difference for me is connecting with others who understand what we’re going through. I’ve met people in similar situations, and we often share tips and resources. Just having someone to chat with while we’re out can ease that feeling of isolation. We’ve started meeting up regularly at local parks or community centers, and those meet-ups are a reminder we’re not alone in this. Carrying a small bag with essentials is also a good move. For me, it includes a water bottle, snacks, and a portable charger. It helps to have those little comforts on hand, especially when we’re out for longer periods. Sometimes, sharing these items with someone in need can spark a connection, and that sense of community is priceless. Many of us have stories about tough experiences in public spaces, whether it’s feeling unwelcome or encountering people who don’t understand our situation. But together, we can support each other through these moments. Anyone else dealing with this? What strategies have you found that help keep you safe and grounded while navigating the world out there?
