How do you cope when people make assumptions about your identity?

Have you ever had someone make an assumption about your identity that just hit too close to home? Many of us know what it feels like to be misunderstood or to have our experiences reduced to stereotypes. It can be so frustrating, and honestly, it sometimes feels like we’re constantly battling against these misconceptions.
One thing that has helped me is to remind myself that not everyone knows the full story behind our identities. When someone makes an assumption, I try to take a deep breath and remember that their perspective is often shaped by their own experiences, not ours. This doesn’t mean it’s easy, though! It can still sting. Finding a space to share these feelings is crucial, like talking to someone who gets it. I’ve connected with a few people in my community who’ve faced similar situations, and just being able to express our frustrations together has been such a relief.
Another approach some of us try is to share our stories openly when we feel safe enough. It can be empowering to educate others about our identities and challenge the assumptions directly. I’ve found that when I share my experiences, it opens up a dialogue that helps others understand where I’m coming from. Sometimes, it only takes one conversation to shift someone’s perspective, and it can feel really validating to be seen for who we truly are.
It’s also helpful to practice self-compassion. When someone makes an assumption, it doesn’t define us. We can remind ourselves of our worth and the complexities of our identities. Taking time to recharge and reflect after a tough interaction can make a world of difference. Finding little ways to celebrate our identities, whether it’s through art, writing, or connecting with others, can help us reclaim our narratives.
Anyone else dealing with this? Sometimes just talking to someone who understands what we go through changes everything. I’d love to hear what’s helped you cope!
