The expectations of family regarding marriage and how that affects our mental health

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us in the Hazara community understand the weight of family expectations when it comes to marriage. The pressure to conform to traditional timelines can feel overwhelming and can take a toll on our mental health. Sometimes it seems like everyone around us is getting engaged or married, and we might feel lost or anxious about where we fit into those expectations. One thing that really helped me was opening up to a cousin who was feeling the same pressure. We started meeting regularly to share our fears and frustrations. It was such a relief to talk about the anxiety that comes with these expectations, especially when family members ask, “When will you settle down?” or “Don’t you want to start a family?” Just having someone to vent to made the hard days a little easier. Another approach that some of us find helpful is setting boundaries with family. It can be tough, especially when we deeply respect our traditions, but it’s important to communicate our own hopes and dreams too. If you’re feeling pressured, it might be worthwhile to have a chat with your family about how their expectations are affecting you. Expressing our feelings doesn’t mean we’re rejecting our culture; it’s about finding a balance that honors both our identity and our individuality. We might also find solace in connecting with others outside of our immediate family. Whether it’s through community gatherings or online groups, sharing our experiences can remind us that we’re not alone in navigating these expectations. Sometimes, just knowing there are others who understand can ease that feeling of isolation. Anyone else dealing with family expectations around marriage? How do you manage the pressure while taking care of your mental health? Would love to hear your stories and what’s helped you through this!
