Navigating public restrooms as a genderqueer person can stir up a mix of anxiety and frustration for many of us. We often face that awkward moment when we’re standing in front of the restroom sign, questioning which door feels right. It can feel like a minefield, and honestly, it’s exhausting.
One strategy that some of us have found helpful is to scope out the restrooms in advance, especially in places we know we’ll be visiting. If we can, we might take a quick peek at the facilities before we need to use them, just to see how others are using them. Sometimes, we might find a single-stall restroom that feels more private and less stressful.
Another approach is to lean into the buddy system. If you’re out with a friend or someone who understands what we’re navigating, it can be a relief to have them nearby. We can even make a pact to check in with each other after we go, sharing how it felt or if we experienced any awkward moments. Having that support can lighten the load, and it’s comforting to know we’re not alone in these situations.
Many of us also find that carrying a little reminder with us can help when we feel uncertain. Whether it’s a small note in our wallet or just a mantra in our heads, reminding ourselves that our existence is valid, regardless of how we present or identify in that moment, can be empowering. It’s all about reclaiming our space in those restrooms and reminding ourselves that we deserve to be there just like anyone else.
Has anyone else faced those restroom challenges? It’d be great to hear what strategies have worked for you or how you’ve navigated those moments. Sometimes, just sharing our experiences can help ease the tension. 🌈
