How do you handle misgendering in public spaces or at work?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us know the sinking feeling that comes when someone misgenders us in public or at work. It can feel like a punch to the gut, especially when we're just trying to navigate spaces that often feel unwelcoming. It’s exhausting to have to constantly correct people or feel like we’re not being seen for who we truly are. But there are ways to handle these moments that might make things a bit easier. One thing that has helped me is practicing a few responses for those times when misgendering happens. It can be tough to think on your feet, especially in the moment, but having a go-to phrase ready can make things less stressful. For example, I often say something simple like, "Actually, I go by they/them," or "I prefer this name." It’s not always easy, and sometimes it feels like I’m educating others instead of just living my life, but it helps to reclaim a bit of power in those situations. Another strategy that resonates with many of us is finding allies in our environment. Whether it’s coworkers, friends, or even acquaintances, having just one person who knows our pronouns and can back us up can make a world of difference. I found a coworker who really gets it, and whenever someone misgenders me, they gently correct them. It’s comforting to know there’s someone in my corner, and it can lessen the emotional weight we carry. We should also remember that it’s okay to take a moment for ourselves after these encounters. Sometimes just stepping away to breathe or grounding ourselves can be incredibly helpful. We might need to process what just happened, and that’s completely valid. We deserve space to acknowledge our feelings without rushing to brush them off. Anyone else dealing with this? It can be a tough journey, but sometimes just sharing our experiences with someone who gets it makes everything feel a little lighter. I’d love to hear what’s worked for you!
