Navigating pronouns in casual conversations — what works for you?

Many of us know that navigating pronouns can be a bit of a minefield, especially in casual conversations. It can feel awkward to correct someone or to introduce ourselves with a pronoun that shifts as often as our identities do. We’re not alone in feeling anxious about how others perceive us or whether they'll respect our choices.
One thing that has helped me is finding ways to open the conversation naturally. When meeting someone new, I often lead with my name and pronouns in a casual way, like, “Hey, I’m Alex, and I use they/them pronouns. How about you?” This simple introduction sets the tone and gives others a nudge to share their pronouns without feeling like it’s a formal situation. It can feel a bit scary at first, but many of us find that it makes the conversation feel more inclusive.
Another approach I've found useful is to use humor or lightness when someone misgenders me. Instead of feeling hurt or defensive, I might say something like, “Close, but I’m actually they/them today!” This can ease the tension and often leads to a more genuine discussion about pronouns. Plus, it gives them an opportunity to correct themselves without feeling embarrassed, which can lighten the mood for everyone.
Sometimes, it helps to have a buddy system. If you have a friend or someone you trust, you can remind each other to use the right pronouns when you’re in social settings. Having even one person in your corner who understands this struggle can really make a difference. We can support each other, and that connection can ease the pressure of navigating pronoun usage.
It’s completely normal to feel overwhelmed by the expectations of how we present ourselves. Many of us navigate different identities in different spaces, which can make it tricky to find the right words. But every small step counts, and finding a community where we can share these experiences is so valuable.
Anyone else dealing with this? How do you handle pronoun conversations? I’d love to hear what’s worked for you!
