Navigating family holidays when you're the only out person in the group

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Holidays can be such a mixed bag, especially when you're the only out person in your family. Many of us know that feeling of walking into a room full of relatives who just don’t get it, or worse, who might have outdated views on who we are. It can feel isolating and exhausting to navigate those dynamics, but there are ways to make it a little easier. One thing that helps is setting boundaries ahead of time. We can decide what topics are off-limits to avoid those uncomfortable conversations. If you know someone in the family always brings up your love life, maybe you can gently steer the conversation elsewhere or even have a little prepared line ready to deflect. Having a plan can help us feel more in control when emotions run high. Another approach is to find small moments of connection with those who are supportive. If there’s a cousin or an aunt who’s more understanding, try to carve out some one-on-one time with them during the gathering. Having even one person in your corner can make a world of difference. I remember finding a cousin who I hadn’t spoken to much before, and it turned out we bonded over shared experiences — it really lightened the atmosphere for me. It’s also okay to take breaks when things get overwhelming. Excusing yourself for a few minutes to breathe, go for a walk, or even just step into another room can help reset your energy. We shouldn’t feel guilty about needing space; it’s a sign of self-care, especially when surrounded by people who might not fully understand our experiences. Lastly, remember that it’s perfectly valid to feel frustrated or sad about not being accepted fully. Many of us feel that weight, and it’s okay to acknowledge it. Sometimes, just sharing these feelings with someone who gets it can help ease that burden a bit. Anyone else navigating these tricky family dynamics this holiday season? It can feel lonely sometimes, but I’d love to hear what strategies have worked for you.
