How do you cope with feelings of abandonment that creep up unexpectedly?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us know that feeling of abandonment all too well. It can creep up unexpectedly, leaving us questioning our worth or feeling isolated, even when we’re surrounded by people. Whether it’s triggered by a past experience or a small comment from someone close to us, it’s like a wave that crashes over us, reminding us of those early days in foster care when stability felt like a distant dream. One thing that really helps is acknowledging those feelings when they arise. Instead of pushing them down, we can try to sit with them for a moment. It might sound counterintuitive, but letting ourselves feel that pain can be a way to reclaim our narrative. I’ve found that writing down what I’m feeling helps. It’s a way to express the turmoil inside and sometimes even see it from a new perspective. Journaling has become a safe space for many of us to articulate our emotions without judgment. Connecting with others who understand our unique experiences makes a significant difference too. I remember finding a few people in this community who share similar stories of feeling abandoned. We’ve started talking regularly, and it changed everything for me. Just knowing that someone else gets it can alleviate that sense of isolation. If you’re comfortable, reaching out to someone here or sharing your story can help you feel a little less alone in those moments. Another approach that some of us have tried is creating a self-care toolkit. This might include things that bring us comfort—like a favorite playlist, a cozy blanket, or even a hobby that helps us escape for a bit. Having these tools at the ready for when those feelings hit can provide a little relief and distraction. Sometimes, it’s the small things that ground us in the present. Mindfulness practices, like focusing on our breath or the sensations around us, can help pull us back when we start spiraling into those feelings of abandonment. It reminds us that we are here and now, and we have the power to shape our own paths. Anyone else dealing with these feelings? It can really help to share and hear what’s worked for you when those waves come crashing in. Let’s support each other through this journey!
