Finding balance: how do you prioritize your own needs while supporting someone with addiction?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us know that supporting someone with addiction can leave us feeling stretched thin. It’s so easy to prioritize their needs over our own, wanting to be there for them as they navigate their journey. Yet, if we’re not careful, we can lose sight of what we need to stay strong. One thing that really helped me was setting small boundaries. For example, I started dedicating a specific time each week just for myself. It could be a walk, reading a book, or even just taking a long bath. At first, I felt guilty about taking this time, but I soon realized that when I carve out space for my own mental health, I’m better equipped to support my loved one. It’s like when they say you need to put on your own oxygen mask first before helping others. Another approach that many of us find helpful is to connect with others who are in similar situations. I joined a support group where I could share my feelings without judgment. Just knowing that others understand the unique challenges we face can be a game-changer. We often share tips about how to handle tough situations and remind each other that it’s okay to seek joy and fulfillment outside of our loved one's struggles. It’s also crucial to recognize that supporting someone with addiction can be emotionally draining. We might feel anger, sadness, or even resentment at times. Acknowledging these feelings instead of pushing them away has been liberating for many of us. Talking about these emotions with someone who understands can lighten the burden, making it easier to navigate our loved one's ups and downs. Above all, remember that our well-being matters too. If we can find even one person to connect with — whether it’s a friend, family member, or someone from the community — it can make all the difference. Anyone else experiencing this balancing act? I’d love to hear how you prioritize your needs while being there for someone you care about.
