How do you cope with the guilt of setting boundaries with a loved one struggling with addiction?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us know that feeling of walking on eggshells when it comes to a loved one who’s struggling with addiction. It’s that heavy mix of love, worry, and guilt that can make setting boundaries feel like an impossible task. We care deeply, yet we also recognize that sometimes, we need to prioritize our own mental health. One thing that helped me was realizing that setting boundaries doesn't mean I love them any less. It’s more about recognizing that their struggles can’t become my entire world. I started small—maybe it was saying no to a last-minute request or deciding I wouldn’t engage in certain conversations that triggered my anxiety. Each time I did this, it felt a bit less scary. And honestly, I found that having even one person in my life who understood this struggle made a huge difference. We started sharing our experiences and coping strategies regularly. Just knowing someone else gets it can lighten the load. Another approach I found useful was writing down my feelings. It was a safe space to express the guilt and confusion without judgment. Once I put my thoughts on paper, I could see how my feelings were valid but also how they were often tied to the fear of hurting my loved one. This practice helped me clarify my boundaries and reinforce my decision to uphold them. Many of us also find it helpful to connect with others who are navigating similar challenges. Whether it's through a support group, online forums, or just a friend who has been there, sharing our experiences can help ease the isolation that often accompanies this journey. You might find someone going through the same thing, and together, you can talk about what boundaries look like for each of you. Ultimately, it’s about finding that balance between caring for our loved ones and caring for ourselves. We’re in a tough spot, but we’re not alone. Anyone else dealing with this? I’d love to hear what has helped you manage those feelings of guilt and set boundaries.
