How do you cope with the feelings of isolation when friends don’t understand your situation?

Many of us know that feeling of isolation all too well. It’s tough when friends and even family don’t quite grasp what we’re going through as loved ones of incarcerated individuals. It can feel like we’re carrying this heavy burden alone, and the loneliness can be overwhelming at times.
One thing that has really helped me is finding a small group of people who understand our unique situation. Connecting with others who are going through similar experiences has been a game-changer. Whether it’s chatting online or meeting in person, just sharing our stories can lighten the emotional load. I remember meeting someone who also had a loved one in prison, and we started talking regularly. It felt like a breath of fresh air to have someone who just got it, without needing to explain every little detail.
Another approach that some of us find helpful is being open about our feelings with trusted friends. It’s not always easy, but sometimes sharing just a glimpse of what we’re facing can help them understand better. Maybe you could say something like, "I’m really going through a tough time right now because my partner is incarcerated." It won’t solve everything, but it might open the door for them to be more supportive in ways you need.
We can also create our own support systems. Whether it's online forums, local meet-ups, or even book clubs focusing on these experiences, having a safe space to express ourselves can make a huge difference. I found a local group that meets monthly, and just being around people who relate is such a relief — it reminds us we’re not alone in this.
Anyone else dealing with this? Sometimes just talking to someone who really understands makes all the difference — I’d love to hear what’s helped you.
