How do you cope with the guilt of leaving behind family and friends still in the organization?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Leaving behind family and friends still in the organization can be one of the toughest parts of stepping away from the Jehovah's Witness community. Many of us know that feeling of guilt — it’s like a heavy weight on our shoulders. We remember the close ties we had, the shared beliefs, and the countless gatherings, and it can be heartbreaking to think about those we’ve left behind. One thing that helped me cope with the guilt was finding other ex-JWs who really understand what I’m going through. Sharing stories about the experiences we had in the organization, and the reasons we chose to leave, has been incredibly validating. You might find that just one conversation with someone who has walked a similar path can help lighten that burden. It’s comforting to know that we’re not alone in feeling this way. Another approach some of us take is to focus on the positives of our new lives. It’s easy to dwell on what we’ve lost, but it can be helpful to remind ourselves of the freedom we’ve gained. Exploring new interests, building friendships outside the organization, and discovering our own identities can be empowering. When those moments of guilt creep in, I try to redirect my thoughts to the opportunities I now have to grow and explore life on my own terms. Sometimes, it helps to stay connected with those who are still in the organization, even if we’ve stepped away. It can be hard, especially when we know they might not understand our choices. But maintaining some level of connection, when appropriate, can create a bridge that allows us to still care for them, even from a distance. Many of us find comfort in knowing that we can still love them, even if our paths have diverged. Anyone else feeling this struggle? It’s a tough road, but sharing our experiences can make it a little easier. Let’s talk about what has helped you cope with that guilt and how you navigate those feelings.
