Does anyone else struggle with feeling guilt or shame about leaving, even after years away?

Leaving behind the life we knew as Jehovah's Witnesses can be a heavy burden, and many of us grapple with feelings of guilt or shame long after we’ve walked away. It’s like carrying a backpack filled with stones — each one representing the relationships we left, the beliefs we questioned, or the family members we feel we’ve disappointed. If you’re feeling this way, know that you’re not alone.
One thing that helped me was talking about these feelings with others who truly understand. It’s easy to feel isolated, but connecting with someone who has also left can make a world of difference. I found a small group of ex-Witnesses, and just sharing our stories helped lift some of that guilt. It reminded me that we’re all navigating a complex journey, and it’s okay to feel what we feel.
Another approach I’ve found useful is to actively remind myself that leaving was a step toward reclaiming my life. Many of us were taught that leaving meant losing our worth, but it’s empowering to reframe that narrative. I started journaling about my experiences, focusing on the positives of my new life and what I’ve gained since leaving. It’s a process, but reflecting on my growth has helped reduce that sense of shame.
Sometimes, we need to confront the feelings head-on. You might find it helpful to explore why those feelings of guilt linger. Are they about the relationships we’ve lost, the fear of being judged, or something else entirely? Having deep conversations with a trusted friend who understands our past can provide clarity.
Anyone else dealing with this? It’s such a tough journey, and sometimes just talking to someone who gets it can change everything. What’s helped you navigate these feelings of guilt or shame?
