The struggle of rebuilding trust after leaving an abusive situation — any tips?

Many of us know that rebuilding trust after leaving an abusive situation can feel like an uphill battle. It’s like your heart has a protective shield that makes it hard to let anyone in, even when you really want to. We carry the weight of past experiences, and it can be tough to shake off that lingering fear of being hurt again.
One thing that helped me was slowly opening up to people who have been through similar situations. I found a couple of others in this community who really understood the complexities of healing. We started sharing our stories over coffee, and it was such a relief to connect with folks who get the struggles of trusting again. Just having that safe space to talk about my fears and experiences made a huge difference.
Another approach I found useful is setting small, manageable goals for trust-building. It could be as simple as sharing a personal story with a friend or asking someone for help with something minor. Each time we take a little step, it becomes easier to let our walls down. I remember feeling so accomplished after asking a neighbor to help me with my groceries – it felt like a huge leap!
We might also find it helpful to reflect on our own boundaries. Knowing what makes us comfortable can guide us in relationships, allowing us to rebuild trust at our own pace. Many of us have learned that it’s okay to take things slow and communicate our needs. When we express ourselves openly, we create a more understanding environment, and that can feel so freeing.
Anyone else grappling with this? It can feel isolating sometimes, but I've learned that just one genuine conversation with someone who understands can change everything. What has helped you in rebuilding trust? Would love to hear your experiences!
