Do you ever feel pressure to live up to expectations from your adoptive family?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us who are adopted often find ourselves under a weighty cloud of expectations from our adoptive families. It can feel like there's this unspoken pressure to fit into the mold they envision for us, which can be really challenging when we’re still figuring out who we are. Sometimes, it seems like our families have these dreams and aspirations for us that don’t quite align with our own paths. One thing that has helped me navigate this pressure is having open conversations with my family about my feelings. It wasn’t easy at first—I felt guilty for wanting to express that I didn’t always share their vision. But once I started sharing, I realized that many of them had no idea how I felt. They genuinely wanted to support me as I carved out my own identity, rather than just the one they imagined. If you’re feeling this way too, consider starting small and gradually sharing your thoughts. You might be surprised at how understanding they can be. Another approach some of us find helpful is connecting with fellow adoptees who understand these unique pressures. I found a small group of others who share similar experiences, and just being able to talk about those feelings has been such a relief. Knowing that we all struggle with expectations in different ways makes it easier to cope. Sometimes, just knowing you’re not alone in this journey can help lighten that load. It's also important to remember that it’s okay to set boundaries. If certain expectations feel overwhelming, it’s perfectly valid to say, “This isn’t working for me.” These conversations can be tough, but they can also lead to deeper understanding and stronger connections with our families. Has anyone else felt this pressure from their adoptive families? I’d love to hear how you’ve navigated those expectations and what’s helped you find your own identity. Sometimes just sharing our stories makes the journey a little easier.
