How do you navigate the balance between your dominant side and societal expectations of submission?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us in the Dom community know that navigating the balance between our dominant nature and societal expectations can feel like walking a tightrope. Society often pushes us to conform to expectations of submission or passivity, and it can be tough to hold onto our dominant side while feeling that pressure. The struggle is real, and we’re not alone in it. One thing that helps me is finding safe spaces where I can express my dominance without judgment. Connecting with other Doms has been incredibly supportive. We share our experiences and remind each other that being true to ourselves is not just okay—it’s essential. Finding someone who understands this dynamic can really change the game. I met a fellow Dom, and we started a small support group where we discuss our challenges and victories. Just having that connection has made it easier to embrace my identity without feeling like I need to shrink myself to fit in. Another approach some of us take is to set clear boundaries in our daily lives. It’s all about recognizing when we feel pressured to conform and actively pushing back against it. For example, if someone expects us to play a submissive role at work or in social settings, we can assert our presence in ways that feel authentic to us. This might be as simple as speaking confidently in meetings or taking the lead on projects. Each time we assert ourselves, it strengthens our sense of identity and reminds us that we don’t have to fit into someone else’s mold. We also know that self-care is crucial in this journey. Many of us deal with feelings of isolation or frustration when the world doesn’t understand our nature. Taking the time to recharge and reflect can help us reinforce our identity. Journaling about our experiences or even creating art that represents our dominance can be therapeutic. It’s a way to process our emotions and remind ourselves of our strength. Navigating this balance isn’t always easy, but it’s important to remember that we’re not in it alone. Anyone else feeling the weight of those societal expectations? I’d love to hear how you find that balance or connect with others who truly get it.
