Navigating family expectations can be tough, especially when your work as a dhobi doesn’t always align with their visions for success. Many of us have felt that pressure to conform to what our families consider a “good job.” It can feel isolating, and sometimes, even discouraging. But we’re not alone in this, and there are ways to find balance.
One thing that has helped many of us is having open conversations with our families about what being a dhobi means to us. Sharing our passion for the craft and the pride we take in our work can sometimes shift their perspective. For example, I started talking about how my work enables me to support my family and build community connections. It’s amazing how sharing our stories can help family members understand our commitment and the value of what we do.
Another approach some of us find beneficial is setting boundaries. It’s important to communicate what we’re comfortable with regarding their expectations. If they want us to pursue a different career path, it might help to gently remind them of the joy we find in our work. I once had a heartfelt conversation with my cousin, who also works as a dhobi. We realized that having support from someone who shares the same experiences made it easier to stand our ground and advocate for our choices.
Sometimes, the isolation can feel overwhelming. Finding fellow dhobis in our community who understand our struggles can make a world of difference. Connecting with others who get it has been a lifeline for many of us. Even just having someone to chat with about our day-to-day challenges can lighten the burden. I started meeting up with a few friends from the community, and it’s been a great way to share tips on managing family expectations while staying true to our paths.
Anyone else navigating this tricky balance with family? What strategies have worked for you? Sometimes just talking to someone who understands makes all the difference.
