Navigating job interviews when you have a criminal record — what’s your experience been like?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Job interviews can feel like a minefield when you have a criminal record. Many of us know that sinking feeling when the topic comes up, or the anxiety that builds leading up to the interview. It’s tough to shake off the doubts that we won't be seen for who we are today, but rather judged for our past mistakes. One thing that helped me was being upfront about my record, but doing it in a way that felt comfortable. I found that sharing my journey honestly, without going into too much detail, can really change the tone of the conversation. It’s about framing it as part of my story, how I’ve grown, and what I’ve learned from it. This approach has led to some surprisingly supportive responses from interviewers who appreciated my honesty. Another tactic we can consider is focusing on our skills and experiences that relate to the job. Highlighting what we bring to the table can sometimes shift the focus away from our past. It’s also helpful to research the company culture beforehand; some organizations are more open to second chances and actively look for diverse experiences. Connecting with others who have similar experiences has been invaluable too. I reached out to a few people in our community and started sharing tips and stories about interviews. Knowing I wasn’t alone in this struggle made me feel more empowered and confident. It’s also important to remember that rejection is part of the process, and it doesn’t define us. Many of us have faced multiple rejections, and while it stings, each one can bring us closer to the right opportunity. Finding someone to talk to about these experiences, whether it’s a friend or someone from our community, can really help ease the burden. Anyone else navigating job interviews with a criminal record? What’s been your experience? Sometimes, just one conversation with someone who understands can make all the difference.
