How do you handle plans with friends when your energy levels are unpredictable?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us know the struggle of making plans with friends when our energy levels are like a rollercoaster. One day we might feel relatively okay, and the next, we’re barely able to get out of bed. It can feel frustrating and even a bit isolating, especially when we want to maintain our friendships but fear letting people down. One thing that really helped me was being upfront with my friends about my chronic fatigue. I’ve found that when I explain my unpredictable energy levels, they tend to be more understanding. I like to say something like, “Hey, I really want to hang out, but I might need to cancel last minute if I’m not feeling up to it.” This honesty has led to more flexible plans, and it’s made me feel less guilty when I need to back out. Another approach many of us try is to suggest low-energy hangouts. Instead of planning a big night out, we might suggest a cozy movie night at home or a simple coffee catch-up. These types of plans can take the pressure off, allowing us to enjoy time with friends without the stress of needing to keep up with more demanding activities. Plus, it can be easier to reschedule if things don’t go as planned. Sometimes, I’ve found that having one or two close friends who really understand my situation can make a big difference. When I connected with someone who also deals with chronic fatigue, we started having regular check-ins — even just via text. These little connections help ease the isolation we often feel and remind us that we’re not alone in this struggle. Anyone else navigating this tricky balance with friends? What’s worked for you when your energy levels are unpredictable? Sharing our experiences can help us all feel a little less alone.
