How do you navigate feelings of guilt for not being able to help your parent as much as you'd like?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us in this community know how heavy it feels to navigate guilt about not being able to help our single parent as much as we wish we could. It’s a tough spot, balancing our own lives while feeling like we should be doing more for them. We love them deeply, but sometimes it feels like there’s just not enough time or energy to be everything they need. One thing that really helped me was learning to set realistic expectations. I used to think I had to be the one to solve all their problems, but I realized that just being there for them in small ways can mean a lot. Even a quick phone call to check in or sending a text to say, “I’m thinking of you,” can be a great reminder that we care. It’s not about solving their issues but rather showing up, even in little ways. Another approach I found useful is having honest conversations about our feelings. I started discussing my guilt with my parent, and it turned out they felt the same way sometimes. It’s comforting to know we’re both trying our best, and it helped us understand each other better. This connection made it easier to navigate our challenges together instead of feeling isolated in our struggles. Many in our community have also shared that finding support in each other can lighten the load. I found someone nearby going through the same experience, and we started meeting up occasionally. Just talking about our feelings of guilt and the ups and downs of helping our parents has been a game changer. We share tips and even just vent about the tough days, which helps us feel less alone in this journey. Does anyone else feel this guilt sometimes? It can be overwhelming, but sharing our experiences with others who get it can make such a difference. I’d love to hear how you’re managing this balance!
