Many of us know the weight of guilt that can settle in when we see our single parent struggling financially. It’s tough watching someone you love work so hard and still face challenges that feel out of their control. The reality is, we often feel like we should be doing more to help, even when we’re still figuring out our own lives.
One thing that has really helped me is recognizing that our parents' struggles aren’t our fault. It can be hard to separate our feelings from their situations. I’ve found that talking about these feelings with someone who understands—maybe even another child of a single parent—can really lift some of that burden. Sharing our experiences helps normalize the guilt and reminds us that we’re not alone in this. Just having someone say, “I get it,” can change everything.
Another approach some of us try is finding small ways to contribute without overwhelming ourselves. This could be helping around the house, cooking a meal, or simply being there to listen when they need to vent. These little acts can ease their stress and also bring us closer together. It reminds us that we can support each other, even in small ways.
It’s also important to be honest about our own feelings. If we’re feeling guilty, it can help to write those feelings down or even talk them out loud. It’s okay to acknowledge that we wish things were different, but we can also remind ourselves that our worth isn’t tied to our ability to fix everything. Accepting that we’re doing the best we can is crucial.
Anyone else navigating this complex mix of guilt and love? I’d love to hear how you’re coping and what’s worked for you. Sometimes just sharing our stories can make a world of difference.
