Navigating the expectations of family and friends who assume we have it easy as kids of single parents

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us have experienced that moment when family or friends casually assume that being a child of a single parent means we’ve got it easy. They might think we’re just constantly surrounded by love and that our lives are free of the typical struggles. But the truth is, navigating this identity can be a mixed bag of emotions and challenges. One thing that often weighs on us is the pressure to prove that we’re doing well, especially when others don’t see the full picture. We might feel we have to downplay our struggles or pretend that everything’s fine, even when it’s not. It can be tough to articulate how our unique experiences shape our lives, and that sometimes we feel isolated in our challenges. Having someone who gets it can be a game changer. I found a friend who also grew up in a single-parent household, and just sharing our stories made me feel so much lighter. We started chatting regularly and it’s been a relief to know I’m not alone in this. Another common feeling is the longing for validation. Many of us might find ourselves explaining our circumstances to family, trying to help them understand that just because we might have more independence, it doesn’t mean we don’t have struggles. We juggle responsibilities that others might overlook, like helping out financially or taking on more chores at home. It can feel exhausting, both physically and emotionally. Reaching out to others who share these experiences can help us feel seen and understood. And let's not forget about the expectations that come from friends who might think we’re naturally resilient. They might not realize that sometimes we just want to be heard, or that we have our own worries about the future. Finding even one person who recognizes the unique challenges we face can make a huge difference. Sharing our feelings with someone who truly understands can ease the burden. Anyone else dealing with this? It can be really comforting to connect with others who know what it’s like to navigate these expectations and experiences. I’d love to hear what’s helped you or how you cope!
