How do you cope with feelings of guilt or shame about your parent's addiction?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us know the weight of guilt and shame when it comes to our parents' addiction. It can feel like an invisible burden we carry, often leading to feelings of isolation. We might find ourselves questioning our worth, wondering if we could have done something differently to prevent their struggles. It’s a heavy emotional load, and if you're feeling this way, you’re not alone. One thing that really helped me was opening up to someone who understands what it’s like to have a parent battling addiction. Sharing my feelings with a close friend who has a similar experience made me realize that the guilt I felt wasn’t mine to carry. We’d meet regularly to talk about the ups and downs, and just acknowledging our shared struggles made it so much lighter. Sometimes, even saying, “I feel guilty for wanting to step back” can help break that cycle of shame. Another approach that some of us find useful is reframing our thoughts. When guilt creeps in, I try to remind myself that my parent’s addiction is not my fault. We didn’t choose this path for them, and we’re not responsible for their choices. Finding affirmations that resonate with our experiences can help, even if it’s just a simple phrase like, “It’s okay to prioritize my own wellbeing.” Writing these down and revisiting them during tough moments can be a small yet powerful way to combat those feelings when they arise. Sometimes, we might struggle with how to support our parents without sacrificing our own mental health. Setting boundaries has been crucial for many of us. It’s okay to step back when we need to recharge. I found that having even one person in my life who truly understands this struggle makes a big difference. We can share tips on how to create those boundaries and support each other while we navigate this difficult landscape. Anyone else dealing with this? How do you cope with those feelings of guilt or shame? Sometimes just one real conversation with someone who gets it changes everything. I’d love to hear what’s helped you.
