How do you handle guilt when your parent relapses, even if you know it's not your fault?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us know the feeling of guilt that washes over us when a parent relapses. Even when we logically understand that it’s not our fault, the emotional weight can feel overwhelming. It’s as if we’re left holding a bag of mixed emotions — love, frustration, and that nagging guilt that just won’t let go. One thing that really helped me was finding a space to share my feelings. Connecting with others who get it has been invaluable. I remember the first time I opened up to someone about how I felt responsible for my parent’s struggles. Just hearing them say, “I’ve been there too” made a huge difference. We started checking in with each other regularly, and those conversations became a lifeline when I felt like I was drowning in guilt. Another approach some of us try is to create boundaries around our emotions. When a relapse happens, it’s easy to spiral into “What could I have done differently?” or “Did I say something that triggered this?” Instead, we can remind ourselves that addiction is a complex issue, and it’s not our job to fix it. I find it helpful to write down my feelings or even talk it out loud, letting it flow without judgment. It’s a way to process what I’m experiencing without internalizing blame. We might also need to take a step back and focus on our own self-care. It’s okay to prioritize our well-being, even when we’re worried about our parent. Simple things, like taking a walk, listening to music, or reaching out to friends who understand, can give us a break from the heaviness. Some of us have formed small support groups where we can vent, share strategies, and just be ourselves without fear of judgment. Ultimately, we’re all navigating a tough path, and it helps to remember that we’re not alone in this. Anyone else dealing with guilt like this? It can feel isolating, but sometimes just one real conversation with someone who gets it can change everything. What’s been your experience?
