Have you experienced discrimination in the workplace because of your background, and how did you handle it?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us from Burakumin descent know that navigating the workplace can be a minefield, especially when discrimination rears its ugly head. It’s an experience that can lead to feelings of isolation and frustration. We might find ourselves questioning our worth or feeling the weight of our backgrounds in ways that others just don’t understand. One thing that helped me was finding a small group of colleagues who also share similar backgrounds. We started meeting up during lunch breaks to chat about our experiences and support one another. Just having that safe space made it easier to voice our concerns about microaggressions or overt discrimination we faced at work. We shared stories about how to address issues like being overlooked for promotions or having our opinions dismissed in meetings. Sometimes just knowing that others were going through the same thing made the challenges feel a little lighter. Another approach many of us have found helpful is keeping a record of incidents that felt discriminatory. It can be empowering to document what happens, whether it’s a dismissive comment or being excluded from a project. This not only validates our feelings but also provides concrete examples if we decide to bring it up with HR or management. It’s a tough step to take, but we deserve to be heard, and having evidence can make our case stronger. And let’s be honest, it’s not easy to confront these issues. We might worry about potential backlash or being seen as troublemakers. Yet sharing our stories with allies at work can sometimes shift perspectives. I found that having even one supportive person in a higher position can lead to meaningful changes. They might not fully understand our experiences, but once they hear our stories, it can open doors for conversations about diversity and inclusion that truly matter. Anyone else dealing with discrimination at work because of your background? How have you navigated those moments? Sometimes just connecting with someone who understands can make a world of difference.
