Have you experienced discrimination at work or in social settings because of being Buraku? How did you handle it?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us know how it feels to carry the weight of being Buraku in a world that often doesn’t understand or accept our identity. Whether it’s subtle comments, exclusion from social events, or even outright discrimination in the workplace, these experiences can be incredibly isolating and frustrating. One thing that has helped me navigate these tough situations is finding allies—people who understand the Buraku experience and can offer support. For instance, I connected with a colleague who shared similar experiences. We started meeting for coffee to discuss our challenges and brainstorm strategies to handle discrimination. Just having someone to talk to about it made me feel a lot less alone and gave me the courage to speak up when I faced discrimination. Another approach some of us find helpful is documenting incidents of discrimination as they happen. Writing down the details can clarify feelings and serve as evidence if needed later. It can also be a powerful tool when talking to HR or a manager about the situation. When I faced a biased comment at work, I was able to present my experience clearly because I had noted it down. It felt empowering to take control of my narrative. Many of us also find strength in sharing our stories within the Buraku community. Whether it’s in a support group or online, talking about our experiences can help us process the hurt and frustration together. I recently joined a local Buraku group, and just hearing others share their stories made me feel validated. It reminded me that we’re not alone in this, and there’s power in our collective voice. Anyone else dealing with this? How have you handled discrimination at work or in social settings? Sometimes just having a real conversation with someone who truly gets it can change everything. I’d love to hear your experiences and what’s worked for you!
