How do you navigate family expectations when they don't understand your Bodo identity?

Navigating family expectations can feel like walking a tightrope, especially when your Bodo identity isn’t fully understood or accepted by those closest to you. Many of us have felt that heavy weight of expectation, wanting to honor our roots while also yearning to be seen and accepted for who we are today.
One thing that helped me was finding a way to express my Bodo identity through small, meaningful gestures. Whether it’s sharing our traditional stories during family gatherings or preparing Bodo dishes that remind us of home, these acts can spark conversations. Many times, when our family members see us embracing our culture, it opens the door for them to ask questions and learn more. It’s a gradual process, but sharing these pieces of ourselves can bridge the gap between our worlds.
Another approach that has worked for some of us is setting boundaries. This can be tough, especially when we love our families but need them to understand our unique experiences. You might find it helpful to gently explain that while you respect their expectations, your path may look different. This doesn’t mean we’re rejecting our heritage; it’s about carving a space where we can celebrate it in our own way.
Connecting with others who share similar experiences has also been a game-changer. I reached out to a few folks in our community, and it was refreshing to share our stories and challenges. Just knowing that we’re not alone in this journey can make the struggles feel a bit lighter. Sometimes, even just talking to one person who understands the complexities of balancing Bodo identity with family expectations can shift our perspective.
Anyone else navigating this with family? It can feel isolating, but sharing our experiences can really help. What’s worked for you?
