Have you ever felt pressure to conform to societal stereotypes about your caste, and how do you cope with that?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Have you ever felt that weight of expectation based on your caste? Many of us in the Blacksmith (Numu) community know what it’s like to navigate the pressures of societal stereotypes. Whether it’s the assumptions about our skills or the way people perceive our worth, these stereotypes can feel suffocating at times. One way I cope is by finding pride in our heritage. Sharing stories about our craft can be empowering. It reminds me that our skills aren't just tied to old stereotypes but are part of a rich history. Recently, I started attending local events showcasing traditional blacksmithing techniques. Connecting with others who appreciate our craft not only helps me feel less isolated but also reinforces the value of what we bring to the table. Another approach that’s helped me is surrounding myself with people who understand the unique challenges we face. I found a small group of friends who also identify as Numu, and we meet up regularly. Just having those conversations about our experiences with societal expectations, and even the frustrations that come with them, has been a game changer. It’s like a breath of fresh air to laugh about our shared experiences and remind each other that we’re not defined by stereotypes. It's also important to set boundaries with those who hold onto outdated views about our caste. It can be tough to speak up, but I’ve learned that it’s okay to challenge those misconceptions. When someone makes a comment that feels stereotypical, I try to share a bit about who we truly are and what we can achieve. Sometimes, just one conversation can shift their perspective, and that feels rewarding. Anyone else feeling this pressure? How do you cope with the expectations placed on us? Sometimes sharing our stories makes it all feel a little lighter.
