How do you navigate friendships when your mood swings make you feel unreliable?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us know the struggle of feeling like our mood swings make us unreliable friends. One minute we might be chatty and fun, and the next, we’re withdrawing or feeling completely down. It can create this cycle of guilt and frustration, especially when we care about the people in our lives and want to be there for them. One thing that helped me was being honest with my friends about what I’m going through. It might feel a bit scary to open up, but sharing that I experience mood swings can take the pressure off. I found that most of my friends genuinely appreciate knowing what’s going on. It allows them to understand when I might need space or when I’m just not quite myself. You might even find that they have their own struggles, which can create a deeper bond. Another approach some of us try is to set up a sort of “check-in” system with trusted friends. We could agree to send a quick text when we’re feeling up or down, letting them know where we’re at emotionally. This way, they know when to reach out and when to give us a little space. It can be a great way to keep those connections alive without feeling like we're letting anyone down. Also, remember that it’s okay to take breaks from socializing when we need to recharge. Many of us have found that taking a step back doesn’t mean we’re unreliable; it just means we’re looking after ourselves. And when we do feel ready to re-engage, reaching out to friends we trust can be a beautiful way to reconnect. Anyone else navigating friendships while dealing with mood swings? I’d love to hear what’s helped you maintain those connections during the ups and downs.
