How do you navigate identity when people ask where you're from?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us have faced that awkward moment when someone casually asks, “Where are you from?” It can feel like a simple question, but for those of us who are Bidoon or stateless, it often brings a wave of discomfort and a flood of emotions. We know that answering can feel like opening up a can of worms, where our identities and histories are complex and often wrapped in layers of experiences that others may not understand. One approach that has helped me navigate these situations is to have a few prepared responses that feel comfortable for me. When someone asks where I’m from, I might say something like, “I come from a unique background,” or, “I’m part of a community that doesn’t have a specific nationality.” This way, I can share a bit without diving into the heavy details right away. It’s a way to assert my identity while also protecting my emotional space. Another thing that’s been helpful is connecting with others who understand these complexities. I found someone in my area who shares a similar experience, and we started meeting up regularly. Those conversations have made it easier to process the challenges we face, and they remind me that I’m not alone in this. Just having one person who truly gets it can make a huge difference in how we navigate our identities in social situations. We also know that the question about where we’re from can sometimes lead to more questions that feel invasive or uncomfortable. It can be helpful to set boundaries around these discussions. If someone pushes for more details, it’s okay to say, “I’d rather not get into that right now,” or redirect the conversation to something lighter. Protecting our emotional well-being is important, especially when we’re dealing with feelings of invisibility or rejection. How about you? How do you handle those moments when someone asks where you’re from? Sharing our experiences can be a powerful way to connect and support one another.
