Experiences with caste-based discrimination: has it affected your friendships or professional life?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Many of us have felt the impact of caste-based discrimination in our friendships and professional lives, and it can be really tough to navigate. Whether it’s subtle comments, exclusion from social gatherings, or even overt discrimination in the workplace, these experiences shape how we connect with others and view ourselves. One thing I’ve noticed is how caste backgrounds can influence our friendships. Some of us might find that people hesitate to include us in certain circles, or we feel the need to censor our identities to fit in. It’s frustrating when you realize that your friendships feel conditional based on your caste. I remember feeling isolated during group projects at work, where I sensed that my contributions were undervalued or overlooked simply because of where I come from. It made me question my worth and whether I belonged there at all. Another approach that has helped many of us is actively seeking out spaces where we can be ourselves without fear of judgment. Finding communities, whether online or in-person, where our shared experiences are understood can be a game changer. I connected with a few others who share similar backgrounds, and we started meeting up regularly. Just having those conversations, sharing our stories, and validating each other's experiences has been incredibly healing. It’s like finally finding a place where we can breathe and be authentic. If you’re feeling the weight of this discrimination, remember that you’re not alone. Many of us are navigating these challenges, and sharing our experiences can lessen the burden. Connecting with even one person who understands what you’re going through can make all the difference. Anyone else feeling the impact of caste in their friendships or work? I’d love to hear your stories and what’s helped you cope!
