How do you navigate conversations with friends or colleagues who make assumptions about your background?

Many of us have been in those awkward moments when friends or colleagues make assumptions about our backgrounds. It can feel frustrating, isolating, and sometimes even infuriating when people reduce us to stereotypes or make comments that reveal they don't really understand who we are. Navigating these conversations can be tricky, but we don’t have to do it alone.
One thing that has helped me is being open about my own experiences. When someone makes an assumption, I try to engage them in a conversation about my background. It’s not always easy, but sharing my story can help clear up misconceptions. For example, I might say something like, “Actually, my family has a different tradition regarding that,” or “I’ve had a different experience growing up.” This not only educates them but also invites a dialogue where we can connect on a deeper level.
Another approach some of us find useful is setting boundaries. If a comment feels particularly off-base or hurtful, it’s okay to gently let someone know. Saying something like, “I appreciate your curiosity, but that assumption doesn’t reflect my reality,” can help steer the conversation in a more respectful direction. It’s not about confrontation; it’s about expressing our truth and helping others see that there’s more to our stories.
Finding support within our community can also make a huge difference. I remember chatting with a fellow Bania about these experiences, and it was such a relief to realize I wasn’t alone. We even decided to meet up regularly to share our stories and strategies for dealing with these situations. Just having someone who gets it can lighten the emotional load we carry.
So, how do you navigate these kinds of conversations? Anyone else facing similar challenges with friends or colleagues? It can really change everything just to share our experiences and find understanding with one another.
