Navigating sensory overload in public spaces — how do you cope?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Navigating public spaces can feel like stepping into a whirlwind, especially for many of us on the autism spectrum. The sounds, lights, and even the smells can quickly become overwhelming, turning what should be a simple outing into a sensory overload experience. It’s tough, and many of us know that feeling all too well. One trick that helps me is preparing ahead of time. If I know I’m heading to a busy place, I’ll create a little plan. I pick out my outfit based on how comfortable I’ll feel — soft fabrics and layers that I can adjust are key. I also consider the time of day; going early or late when it’s less crowded can make a world of difference. Having a plan gives me a sense of control, which can ease some of that anxiety before I even step outside. Another approach that’s really helped me is bringing sensory tools with me. Noise-canceling headphones can block out jarring sounds, and fidget toys can help with that need to move when everything feels too intense. I’ve also found that carrying sunglasses or tinted glasses not only helps with bright lights but also creates a bit of a barrier that makes me feel safer in overwhelming environments. Connecting with others who get it has been a game-changer. A while back, I found someone who experiences similar sensory challenges, and we started meeting up before heading into crowded places. Just knowing I have someone by my side who understands what I’m feeling can make tackling those overwhelming situations a bit easier. We share tips and even take breaks together when it gets too much, which has made a significant difference. Anyone else dealing with this? What are some of your go-to strategies for managing sensory overload in public? I’d love to hear your experiences and maybe find someone to connect with who understands the struggle.
