Navigating family gatherings when everyone else is deeply religious

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Family gatherings can be a minefield for many of us who identify as atheists or agnostics. When everyone else is deeply religious, it can feel isolating, and we might find ourselves dreading those big family dinners or holiday celebrations. We want to be part of the family and enjoy the festivities, but the pressure to conform to beliefs we don’t share can be overwhelming. One thing that has helped me is finding ways to respectfully set boundaries. For instance, I’ve started gently steering conversations away from topics like faith or spirituality. If someone brings it up, I might say something like, “I appreciate your perspective, but I’m really more focused on the family time right now.” It’s not always easy, but setting these small boundaries can make a significant difference in how I feel during gatherings. Another approach some of us try is focusing on the common ground we do share. Many families have traditions that don’t revolve around religion, such as playing games or cooking together. I’ve found that if I engage with these activities and highlight what we love about them, it helps to create a more inclusive atmosphere. Plus, it can be a great way to connect with family members who might also feel a bit out of place. It can also be comforting to connect with someone else who feels the same way. I found a cousin who shares my beliefs, and we started chatting more during family events. Having someone who understands the challenge of being in a religious family made the experience much lighter — we could share knowing glances and even joke about the awkward moments. Navigating family gatherings as an atheist or agnostic can be tough, but we’re not alone in this. Anyone else dealing with this at family events? What strategies have you found helpful to make things easier? Sometimes just sharing our experiences can lighten the load.
