Navigating friendships when I feel pressure to conform to societal norms around relationships

Have you ever felt that pressure to fit into the mold of what friendships should look like? Many of us in the Arora Community experience this struggle, especially when societal norms about relationships can feel so rigid and unrealistic. It’s tough when we find ourselves questioning our own needs and desires because they don’t align with what others expect.
One thing that really helped me was reframing my perspective on what friendship means. Instead of pushing myself to conform to a traditional idea of friendship—like always being available or sharing every detail of my life—I started to focus on what truly nourishes me. For some of us, that might mean seeking out deeper, one-on-one connections rather than maintaining a large circle of acquaintances. Finding even one person who understands this need for authenticity made a huge difference; we began sharing our thoughts and feelings regularly, and it felt so liberating to be honest about how we navigate our friendships.
Another approach that many of us find valuable is setting clear boundaries. It's okay to say no to social gatherings that don't resonate with you or to take breaks when you need them. Communicating our limits to friends can feel daunting, but it often leads to more genuine relationships. When we express our true selves, we create space for others to do the same, and that can foster a sense of safety that allows us to connect on a deeper level.
It’s also important to remember that not everyone will understand your journey, and that’s okay. Some friends may struggle to grasp why you need to step back or why your friendships look different from theirs. Finding those who respect your experience and your need for authenticity is key. One way to do this is by sharing your feelings openly with those you trust. You might find that there are others who feel the same pressure to conform and are looking for a space to share their challenges.
Navigating friendships can feel overwhelming at times, but remember that it’s perfectly valid to prioritize your own well-being over societal expectations. Anyone else feeling this pressure? How do you manage your friendships while staying true to yourself? Sharing our experiences can really make a difference!
