Many of us know that feeling when someone asks a question about our identity that hits a little too close to home. It can feel intrusive, like they’re peering into a window we’ve carefully kept closed. Whether it's about our mental health, neurodiversity, or chronic illness, these questions can leave us feeling exposed and judged.
One thing that really helps is preparing a few responses ahead of time. We can’t control what others ask, but we can control how we respond. If someone asks why you’re not feeling well or why you do things differently, having a go-to answer can ease the pressure. For example, you might say something like, "I have a condition that makes social situations a bit challenging for me," and then change the topic if you feel comfortable. This can help steer the conversation away from something too personal while still being honest.
Another approach many of us find helpful is setting boundaries. It’s okay to say, “I appreciate your concern, but I prefer not to discuss that right now.” It’s a simple way to protect our space. We deserve to feel safe when sharing our experiences. Having even one supportive person in your life who understands what you’re going through can make it easier to navigate these tricky conversations. I found someone nearby who deals with similar challenges, and we started chatting about our experiences. It was a breath of fresh air to share our feelings and learn how each of us handles those awkward questions.
Lastly, remember that it’s perfectly normal to feel a mix of emotions when these questions come up. Many of us experience a range of feelings, from frustration to sadness. Connecting with others who share our identity can remind us we’re not alone in this. Sometimes just talking to someone who gets it can change everything, allowing us to vent and feel validated.
Anyone else dealing with this? Would love to hear what strategies you’ve found helpful when faced with intrusive questions. Your experiences matter!
