Family gatherings can be a real mixed bag for many of us in the Alawite community. On one hand, we cherish the moments of connection with loved ones, but on the other, the weight of cultural expectations can feel overwhelming. Many of us know that feeling of being scrutinized, whether it’s about our choices, our relationships, or even our career paths. It can be tough to balance our individuality with the traditions and expectations that come with being part of a close-knit community.
One thing that has helped me navigate these gatherings is setting some personal boundaries beforehand. It’s okay to decide what topics are off-limits for you. For example, if you know that questions about your marital status will come up and make you uncomfortable, you might choose to redirect conversations early on. It can be as simple as saying something like, “I’m focusing on my career right now,” and then pivoting to a topic you enjoy. This way, we protect our peace while still engaging with family.
Another approach that some of us find helpful is to connect with a cousin or sibling who understands these pressures. I found someone in my family who feels similarly about cultural expectations, and we’ve started to support each other during these gatherings. Just having one person who gets it can lighten the load significantly. We often share a knowing look when things get a bit too intense, and that small connection makes all the difference.
It’s also important to remind ourselves that it’s okay to step away for a breather. If you feel the weight of expectations closing in, excuse yourself for a moment. Take a walk or find a quiet spot to recharge. Many of us have been there — feeling like we’re drowning in a sea of “when are you getting married?” or “why haven’t you settled down yet?” A little time alone can help us regain our composure and approach the rest of the gathering with renewed energy.
How do you all handle these situations during family gatherings? Are there any specific strategies that have worked for you? Sharing our experiences can really help each other navigate this together.
