Feeling overlooked or dismissed when sharing your own struggles — does this happen to you too?

🌱 Belong Community Resource
Have you ever shared your struggles with family or friends, only to feel like you were met with a shrug or a change of subject? Many of us in this community know that feeling all too well. It can be exhausting to voice our experiences, especially when it feels like no one is really listening or understanding. It’s like we’re invisible, and those feelings can really weigh us down. One thing that has helped me is finding safe spaces where I can express my concerns without the fear of being dismissed. Connecting with other affected family members who truly get what we're going through has been invaluable. Even if it’s just sharing a few messages about our experiences, having someone respond with, “I understand” makes a world of difference. It reminds us that we’re not alone in feeling overlooked. Another approach that some of us try is journaling our feelings before sharing them with others. It might sound simple, but writing down our thoughts can help clarify what we want to express. This way, when we do open up, we feel more equipped to communicate our struggles clearly. Plus, it can help us process the emotions that come with feeling dismissed. Sometimes, it’s helpful to gently remind those we’re sharing with about what we're feeling. If someone seems to brush past our concerns, we might say something like, “I really need you to hear me out on this.” It’s not always easy, but advocating for ourselves can help bridge that gap. And let’s be real—this journey isn’t always easy. The isolation can feel overwhelming, but connecting with even one person who lives it too makes the hard days easier. Anyone else feeling overlooked in their experiences? What’s helped you to feel more heard? Would love to hear your stories!
