Have you ever felt isolated from both your community and mainstream society? How do you cope with that?

Belong
Community Resource
Many of us in the Adi Karnataka community know all too well what it feels like to be isolated from both our immediate community and the broader society. Whether it’s the struggle to be understood or the feeling of being overlooked in conversations about identity and belonging, that sense of isolation can be heavy. We might feel like we’re straddling two worlds — one that doesn’t quite accept us and another that doesn’t fully understand us.
One thing that has really helped me cope is finding smaller, local gatherings focused on our culture and heritage. These spaces can be a breath of fresh air, where we can share our stories and experiences without the fear of judgment. Even if it's just a casual meet-up at a local café or a community event, connecting with others who have similar backgrounds can remind us that we are not alone. Many of us have found that starting conversations with those who share our experiences leads to deeper understanding and friendship.
Another approach some of us have taken is to engage in storytelling. Whether through social media, local art, or community events, sharing our stories can be incredibly powerful. Not only does it help us process our feelings, but it also creates a bridge to others who may be feeling the same way. I remember sharing my journey at a community event, and it felt like a weight lifted off my shoulders knowing that others resonated with my experiences.
It’s also important to acknowledge the unique challenges we face, like navigating stereotypes or the pressure to represent our community in every interaction. Sometimes just finding one person who truly understands the nuances of our cultural identity can make a difference. I found someone in my neighborhood who shares similar experiences, and we started meeting regularly. It’s been a game-changer, having someone who gets it — whether it’s discussing the struggles we face or celebrating our achievements together.
Anyone else feeling this way? Sometimes just one open conversation with someone who truly understands can change everything. What’s your experience been like?
